Isaac Stephenson, born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, became a lumberman, sailor, and entrepreneur in Bangor, Maine before moving to Wisconsin, where he founded the Stephenson National Bank, and later served as a Wisconsin representative in the U.S. Congress. This database is his autobiography, originally published in 1915. It provides an intimate account of life in the Midwest before the turn of the twentieth century and descriptions of regional politics and politicians, particularly the Republican Party. Stephenson also includes commentary on the logging industry, Native American groups, and the rapid development of the Upper Midwest in the nineteenth century.
