Written by a self-made millionaire businessman of Michigan

Description

A self-made millionaire, David Ward was keenly aware of the problems his money would cause his descendants. Published in 1912, this autobiography was written by him as a narrative of his life and a warning to his posterity concerning the dangers of inherited money. It describes his life growing up on a farm on the St. Clair River, his search for meaningful work as a young man, and his control of a lumbering operation on the Pine River. When this business expanded and he became very wealthy, he served as president of the First National Bank of Pontiac. During the 1870s and 1880s, he traveled extensively and described his impressions of West Coast forests and the Southern Appalachian region. For researchers trying to understand the development of the lumbering operations in the Midwest, this can be an informative database.
